Family Program
Many eating disordered women gradually progress into problematic eating patterns (and also drug or alcohol abuse) without realizing that they are developing a life threatening disorder.
It follows that these women aren't aware of the harm they cause those around them, including their co-workers, friends, family members, and loved ones. The family members and loved ones often don't realize the role they play in the cycle of eating disorders and drug addiction.
Sometimes the best thing to do for a woman who is abusing drugs or alcohol can be counter intuitive to those around her.
Our Monthly Family Program
The Victorian of Newport Beach offers a state of the art three and a half day family program facilitated by recovery professionals who
- give lectures
- host workshops
- facilitate group counseling
The family program portion of the treatment process is specifically designed to assist families in crisis as a result of the woman's eating disorder. While it is the woman who is in treatment, the family members benefit greatly from being educated about disordered eating.
The families are given the life tools necessary to reconcile current issues facing their family. The entire family also receives counseling from our highly trained family therapists and can receive referrals or recommendations beyond treatment.
Education and Positive Healing
The Family Program at The Victorian is unlike other family counseling sessions that occur at other treatment centers. We find that all too often families dread attending Family Program, as visions of tearful confrontations and fear of the unknown make them worried about what will occur during the experience.
At The Victorian, we take the opportunity to create an experience that is both educational and positive. Our Family Program is truly for the family and loved ones of the woman who is in treatment. We take the time to educate the family about issues like "enabling" and how to react when the loved one is dishonest or in denial.
Our Family Program also helps families understand the importance of getting help for themselves and how to do so.
There is no more important thing you can do for an addicted daughter, sister, mother, or wife than take care of yourself and respond to the addiction in a unified way.
This approach will help alleviate a lot of the pain and suffering for all of those involved.
The family that attends our Family Program will be given the opportunity to learn from Dr. Michele Lob, Dr. Joseph Bradley, and Dr. Jerry Brown that there is hope for change. And more than just hope, there is the chance for the family member to take constructive action to help the process. While their mother, sister, or daughter is in treatment, the family can be growing, changing, and learning right along with them. The family members will realize the role they can play to give the woman the best chance at maintaining their recovery long-term.
The Family Program will also include a presentation about Neurofeedback by Andrea Brokaw.
